CAD21 carried out the detailed M&E design for the new Energy Centre, main service infrastructure and multiple plantroom upgrades across the Friarage Hospital site, North Yorkshire.

Initially the scheme was intended to include a like for like upgrade of the existing steam energy centre and distribution infrastructure across the site.  Our team interrogated this proposal and suggested that, with supporting preliminary calculations, the trust should consider adopting a medium temperature hot water (MTHW) option rather than steam.

As well as the anticipated efficiency savings associated with replacing old for new plant and controls, the medium temperature hot water solution, when compared to a steam heating service, offered additional benefits including:

• Significant anticipated energy savings through much lower generating temperatures and pressures
• Significant anticipated energy reductions relating to distribution and standing losses
• General savings relating to plant and equipment capital costs
• Lesser insurance and monitoring commitment
