Custody spaces demand safety, security and operational efficiency in a way few other buildings do. A poorly specified system here isn’t an inconvenience, it carries a real cost to the people using and running the building, so we design around that from the start. Working with justice professionals and operators from day one, we understand how each space will be used, then engineer it to be secure, efficient and fit for purpose, with the separation of staff and occupant routes designed in rather than added later.
We helped shape the standards
Having designed more than 300 cells across multiple facilities, we know what works operationally as well as what meets compliance, and we’ve built that into a standardised base design others can work from. That experience is why CAD21 was invited to act as consultants on the new MoJ Design System, so we understand not just the rules, but the thinking behind them. It’s the difference between following a specification and knowing why it reads the way it does, which is what lets us speak the language of both technical compliance and operational reality.
