At the heart of ambitious modernisation plans for the region’s fire service, CAD21 was appointed under the NEC form of contract to undertake full MEP design services for West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service (WYFRS) estate wide Upgrading Programme.

To ensure all WYFRS new buildings achieve net zero operational carbon by 2030 CAD21 collaborated with contractor Willmott Dixon the wider design team and used their net zero carbon expertise to embed passive design into the Birkenshaw scheme from the start. During the detail design stage CAD21 ensured the MEP installations and passive initiatives were optimised through:

• Site orientation
• Building envelope design inc u-value improvements
• Thermal detailing and building air tightness
• Glazed area design to optimise daylight
• Environmental comfort and compliancy of regulations

Supporting WYFRS’s 2030 net zero ambitions is critical to both project and estate wide success and fully aligned with our own 2040 Net Zero sustainability strategy. To ensure the Birkinshaw site is net zero in terms of its carbon footprint, half of the overall spend is for the headquarters building, with the rest divided between the training centre, new fire station and. The green site at Birkenshaw:

• Generates 50,000kWh of sustainable energy per year through and array of solar panels
• Reduces whole life carbon consumption through heat pumps and hybrid heat recovery ventilation which lower energy use and costs for WYFRS
• Lowers embodied carbon through efficient building materials and a whole life cost model approach to MEP replacement

As part of CAD21’s commitment to the local economy along with Willmott Dixon we collaboratively created an employment and skills training plan for the Birkenshaw scheme and agreed project specific KPIs with WYFRS.
