CAD21 delivered the detailed technical design services for the new Custody Suite extension at Barnsley Police Station, for South Yorkshire Police. The scheme consisted of a single storey custody suite compromising 20 detainee cells over 2 wings, and associated interview/support spaces.

Key challenges:

• NR25 interview rooms represent a significant challenge in terms of acoustic treatment and coordination and have necessitated carefully detailed remote FCU approach to remove sources of noise from within the rooms.
• Design of central heating/cooling system to achieve strict overheating criteria within detainee cells, as set out in the Home Office Guidance Document.
• Detailed co-ordination of services within voids at design stage, to enable easy and swift 3D installation modelling to be completed by the M&E contractor. Due to the co-ordination work done at the design stage, installation has been completed within minimal site snags being raised.

We rationalised the smoke exhaust approach in cells that complies with the intent of Home Office guidance whilst facilitating significant reductions in ductwork fire rating and smoke exhaust volumes. There is services co-ordination within voids and plantrooms which encouraged the use of off-site manufacturing techniques.
