CAD21 delivered the detailed technical design services for the new divisional headquarters at Aykley Heads for Durham Constabulary. The scheme consisted of a 3-storey office arrangement generally of open plan arrangement. The project received a BREEAM rating of ‘Very Good’.

Key Challenges:

• Acoustics engineering solutions on open plan floor plates to interface with the chilled beam solution, along with a mixed mode system hybrid natural ventilation solution ensuring the chilled beam control interfaced with the opening window system.
• Soft landings providing user education of the opening windows. We are still in a period of post occupancy engagement. We would have advised this starting a lot earlier, at concept stage, by the client design team.
• The compressed plant space and service voids at the principle second floor locations

The energy efficient and sustainable technologies include high efficiency air sourced heat pumps (ASHP) operating at reduced flow and return temperatures to provide space heating throughout, high temperature ASHP for DHW, high efficiency chillers for space cooling, LED lighting and automatic controls throughout, PV panels on south facing roof and high efficiency thermal wheels on AHU’s.
